Most safety squat bars weigh 60–70 lb (27–32 kg), and a few models range from about 55 to 75 lb. That's 15–25 lb more than a standard 45 lb Olympic bar, so loading it like a normal bar means you're lifting more than you think.

What is a safety squat bar?
A safety squat bar (SSB) has a padded yoke that sits on your shoulders and two handles that come forward, so you hold it in front of you instead of reaching back. That makes it a favourite for anyone with stiff shoulders, sore elbows or wrist pain on regular back squats. The camber, the bend at the ends, also moves the weight slightly forward.
Why the same weight feels heavier
Because the load sits a little further forward, the SSB pushes your upper body to round forward, and your upper back has to work hard to stay upright. Most lifters squat around 5–15% less with a safety squat bar than with a straight bar; in one study, trained lifters averaged about 11% less. That's normal, not a sign you've got weaker. Treat SSB squats as their own lift and track them separately.
| Back squat 1RM | Likely SSB squat (−5 to −15%) |
|---|---|
| 225 lb (100 kg) | 190–215 lb (85–95 kg) |
| 315 lb (140 kg) | 270–300 lb (120–135 kg) |
| 405 lb (180 kg) | 345–385 lb (155–170 kg) |

How to find your bar's exact weight
- Check the sleeves or the yoke for a stamped weight.
- Search the brand and model; it's always on the product page.
- Use a scale. Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself again with the bar on your back (take it from the rack and step onto the scale carefully) and subtract.
Who should use a safety squat bar?
- Lifters with shoulder, elbow or wrist pain on back squats.
- Anyone wanting a stronger upper back, which carries over to squats and deadlifts.
- Beginners who find holding a regular bar uncomfortable.
For every other bar in the gym, see how much each barbell weighs, and check where your squat stands with our average squat guide.
