An adjustable dumbbell handle usually weighs 3–5 lb (1.5–2.5 kg) for standard 1-inch spin-lock handles, and 5–10 lb (2–4.5 kg) for Olympic 2-inch handles. Heavy-duty loadable handles used for very heavy dumbbells can weigh 15–25 lb (7–11 kg). Fixed gym dumbbells are different: the number on the end already includes the handle.
Dumbbell handle weights at a glance
| Type | Typical handle weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard spin-lock handle (1-inch) | 3–5 lb / 1.5–2.5 kg | Most home sets; collars may add about 1 lb |
| Olympic dumbbell handle (2-inch) | 5–10 lb / 2–4.5 kg | Takes regular gym plates |
| Loadable "pro-style" handle | 15–25 lb / 7–11 kg | For dumbbells of 100 lb and up |
| Selectorized dumbbells (dial type) | Included in the setting | The number on the dial is the total weight |
| Fixed gym dumbbells | Included | A "50" weighs 50 lb in total |
Do you count the handle weight?
Yes. The handle is part of what you lift. A 5 lb handle with a 10 lb plate on each side is a 25 lb dumbbell, not 20. Don't forget the collars either: spin-lock collars often weigh around half a pound each, which adds up on light exercises like lateral raises.
| Plates per side | With a 4 lb handle | With an 8 lb handle |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 lb | 9 lb | 13 lb |
| 5 lb | 14 lb | 18 lb |
| 10 lb | 24 lb | 28 lb |
| 25 lb | 54 lb | 58 lb |
How to find your handle's exact weight
- Check the box or the brand's website; adjustable sets always list the handle weight.
- Use a kitchen or bathroom scale. A bare handle fits on most scales.
- Weigh with the collars on, since you'll always lift with them.
Tips for training with adjustable dumbbells
- Write down the total weight, handle included, so you can track progress properly.
- Check the collars every set. A loose plate is a dropped plate, usually on a toe.
- Use small jumps. Going from 2.5 to 5 lb plates on a lateral raise is a big increase; add reps first. See progressive overload.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a gym dumbbell handle weigh?
In fixed gym dumbbells, the handle is included in the number on the end. Only adjustable handles need adding.
Do adjustable dumbbell handles weigh 5 lb?

Are two dumbbells counted as one weight?
Usually people log the weight of one dumbbell, such as "2 × 30 lb". Just be consistent.
